What is HA ?
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar found naturally in our skin that holds water and helps keep it hydrated and plump. The HA within our bodies holds a thousand times its weight in water to not only retain all that moisture in our skin and joints, but also prevent all that moisture from evaporating into the air.
Just like collagen and elastin, the amount of naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older.
When used in skin care products like creams, serums, and even masks, hyaluronic acid brings moisture to the surface of your skin. Because of its ability to draw and hold water, it can be used as a humectant in your skin care regimen.
Hyaluronic acid plays well with most other ingredients and can be paired with peels, retinols, vitamins, and other acids. The only exception would be acids with low pH levels, like glycolic acid, because it may degrade the HA and make it ineffective.
Benefits from HA
1. If skin is sufficiently hydrated, it feels super-soft, plump and pillowy and looks so much more radiant, this means there’s never too much HA!
2. When skin is hydrated, lines and wrinkles (even the deeper ones) appear diminished, so it is a great ingredient for those with aging skin who want to achieve a plumped skin look.
3. It works wonders on everyone, hyaluronic acid works for any skin type, even sensitive or breakout-prone skin, as well as those with an oily complexion. Some people believe that acne-prone or oily type of skin don’t need to hydrate their skin, which is a HUGE mistake, you only need to the right type of ingredients in your routine!
You can use HA everyday without any risk, it doesn’t strip the skin or cause any down time when applied topically.
When looking for a HA serum you’ll find that you can either buy a serum that contains mainly HA acid like “Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5” from The Ordinary , or you can buy a serum that contains different ingredients + HA, this means you can target multiple skin concerns with only one product!
My favorite HA serum is “Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5” from The Ordinary which I mentioned previously. I like to use it in the morning before my moisturizer during winter time, when my skin needs extra moisture without needing to switch to a heavier face cream.
I also love using it when I’m on holidays, on very humid or hot places because it’s super light, non- sticky, absorbs really quick and I don’t need to apply a face cream on top, I can simply follow with my SPF.
As you can see this serum is very versatile! Depending on your skin needs it can be an extra step to provide more moisture and confort to your skin, or on its own if your skin needs lighter formulas!
